Research interests: Basic and applied ecology and evolution in coastal ecosystems

My general research goals are to: (1) understand factors that are important in the development, maintenance and spatial and temporal patterns of biological communities, (2) assess impacts resulting from anthropogenic events and, (3) develop robust approaches for the design and assessment of monitoring and mitigation projects. I am investigating the metapopulation dynamics of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera with SBC LTER. Kelp forests are an ideal system for testing metapopulation theory because they occur in discrete patches that undergo frequent local extinctions and recolonizations on time scales of a few years. I am particularly interested in the potential role that genetics and inbreeding depression play in metapopulation patch dynamics in giant kelp.
