I am looking at nutrient export from catchments and tributaries in relation to rainfall patterns, topography, land cover, and land use. Annual variability in rainfall in these coastal watersheds leads to variations in annual runoff of up to three orders of-magnitude, and the variation in flux can be even greater. A major focus of my research is on determining how these factors interact to change the ecology of the Ventura River (one of the most biologically diverse streams within the SBC LTER region) by episodically creating conditions that trigger substantial algal blooms.
