SBC LTER Fileservers

Our fileservers are hosted by the PISCO project. Currently (as of August 2005) there are 2 servers, one houses the user's home directories, and the second, all project data. All project-related data should be stored on the servers, not on your desktop. Anything that is placed on the server disks will be backed-up nightly. If you lose any files, contact SBC Help, and we will do our best to restore the lost or corrupted file(s).

Fileserver Access

You may access the SBC-LTER data server through a browser, by unix login via secure shell (ssh) connection, through Windows or Mac filesharing services. If you need assistance with your SBC-LTER account or wish to change your account password, please send email to SBC Help.

Access via a Web Browser

Clicking on the Internal Data Link here or on the previous page, requires a login name and password. If you are not familiar with the directory structure, see the Internal Site Guide (in progress, contact SBC's data manager). Your research group if often the best resource for answers to specific questions.

Access via a mapped drive - Windows or Macintosh

From an on-campus desktop computer (i.e., at UCSB), you can create a desktop folder which accesses the server directly. You can connect to the server from a PC running Windows 9x/Me, NT, 2000 or XP; or from a Mac running MacOS-X.

Click on one of the links below for instructions.

Access via SSH and SFTP

Remember, you can always download files from your browser, at "Internal Data", but you may not deposit files this way. You can use SSH or SFTP to access files (both download and upload) from off-UCSB computers.
  • SSH: SSH clients for Windows are available from cygwin (cygwin.com) and SSH (free non-comercial version). For Macintosh, SSH can be invoked from the command line.
  • Secure FTP (SFTP): Secure FTP can be used to access files from off-campus computers. There is a SFTP client included with SSH for Windows (above). A second SFTP client called WinSCP is also available. For Macintosh, a free, easy-to-use SFTP client is "Fugu". Another FTP client for Macs is YummyFTP, available for a small fee.
Log into the server:
  • sbcdata.lternet.edu
You'll be in your home directory. To reach the data areas
  • cd /data01/sbclter/internal
Some clients (e.g., WinSCP), may require you to browse to this directory by going back up to "/root" (in the right-hand window) and then choosing "data01" and "sbclter", "internal". Again, the directory structure can be viewed at the Internal Site Guide.

SBC LTER Home Directories

In your home directory, there are 2 subdirectories:

  • personal-data: Files that you place in this directory are readable and writable only by you. They are not shared files. You should use this space for your work-in-progress; daily backups are kept at MSI and monthly tape backups are kept off-site (as of Summer 2006).
  • public-html: Files that you place in this directory can be access by the outside world through a browser. For help or more information, contact your data manager.
